Master Programme

The educational activity of the Centre is closely related to the work of the St. Petersburg State University. And this is not accidental, since the Centre itself is based on the University’s International relations school, and members of the Centre’s research team are scientists and teachers of the Department of European Studies.

A significant part of the attention paid to the study and teaching students the political, economic and cultural characteristics of the European Region is connected with the work of the special master’s educational programme "European Studies".

The programme "European Studies" is devoted to the study of integration processes in modern Europe, primarily, various aspects of the formation and development of the European Union. Today, the EU is acquiring ever-greater economic and political influence both on international relations in general and on individual states, for example, on Russia, in particular. We are studying trends in the development of European integration and helping to determine a more effective way of interaction with the EU.

The programme "European Studies" was the very first master programme at the faculty. The first intake of students into it was implemented in 1996. The curriculum of the programme was developed within the framework of the Tempus programme together with the project partners of the faculty: the College of Europe (Bruges, Belgium), the University of Limerick (Ireland) and the Institute of Public Administration (Maastricht, the Netherlands). It is these universities that are universally recognized as the leading educational institutions in the field of European integration, and their master’s programmes in European studies invariably arouse great interest. For example, the College of Europe has traditionally specialized in training officials for the institutions of the European Union. While developing our programme, we tried to use all the achievements of our partners, but taking into account the Russian specifics. The curriculum of the programme includes studying the integration processes in modern Europe, first of all, various aspects of the European Union’s activities, but also the most significant problems of modern Europe (for example, security problems) and issues related to Russia’s place in Europe.

Features of the programme

Our programme on European studies was the first such program in Russia. It was the basis for the creation of the state standard. Now our experience is being adopted by other Russian universities.

Since 2006, the teachers of the programme have been participating in the new Tempus project, the purpose of which is to use our experience in teaching European studies for the development of educational programmes of the MGIMO (U) European Studies Institute. Our teachers are invited to lecture at MGIMO.

Under the Tempus programme, the students of our programme, who are fluent in English and French, are given the opportunity to study at the College of Europe.
